Editor’s note: Great Bend has an extra loss on the season that was not noted in previous articles. The Panthers fell 2-0 to Andover in the opening round of the Titan Classic at the beginning of the month.
HAYS— Hays put up a 2-0 run to start Tuesday’s WAC contest before Eric Martinez converted a goal from a pass from Brian Galindo late in the first half as the Panthers fell in a 3-1 decision. The loss breaks a four game winning streak for the Panthers and avenges an Indian loss to Great Bend last week at Cavanaugh Fields.
“We played like two completely different teams from the first half to the second half,” said coach Gus Prieto. “We had a lot of errors in the beginning but played more consistently in the second half. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net.”
Martinez’s goal came around the three-minute mark in the first period.
The Indians sealed the Panthers’ fate on a penalty kick in the closing half. Great Bend’s offense fell dormant down the stretch as Hays picked up the 3-1 victory.
The Panthers drop to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in WAC competition. The Panthers will host Dodge City Thursday at 4 p.m. at Cavanaugh Fields.
