HUTCHINSON — Great Bend’s Junior Torres sparked a dominating 13-5 victory over the Hutchinson Monarchs with a pair of home runs in Wednesday’s Sunflower Collegiate League baseball showdown.
Bat Cats crafty southpaw pitcher Matt Nedved (3-0) backed up starter Dylan Blomquist with four strikeouts in 22/3 innings of shutout baseball.
The Bats Cats (10-4) tie the Monarchs (10-4) for second place after winning the past two games with Friday’s series finale scheduled at Al Burns Memorial Field.
Torres blasted a two-run homer in a seven-run first inning off ineffective Monarch starter Ryan Scholtzhauer from Hutchinson Community College. Nico Baumbauch singled home Alex Rodgers and Zane Spinn singled in Baumbach. Micah Grover’s double plated Spinn and Jett Forrest. Torres’ homer scored Grover. Tyler Henry scored on Rodgers’ single for a 7-0 lead.
Baumbach scored on Grover’s second-inning single for an 8-0 lead. Torres ripped his second homer in the fifth inning.
Monarchs Cooper Harris and Breck Nowik hit homers for a 9-2 score. Easton Loyd scored on a groundout and Barton Couhar Tanner Schrag scored on a wild pitch after a double. Nedved struck out Travis Perry and Tanner White to preserve a 9-4 lead after five innings.
Perry misplayed a Forrest sixth-inning groundball that allowed Rodgers and Baumbach to score for an 11-4 lead.
Monarch Tanner White doubled and scored on Nowik’s single in the eighth-inning for an 11-5 score.
Tyler Henry singled home Grover, who surprised the Monrachs with a stolen base. Torres scored on a wild pitch for a 13-5 lead.
