HAYS – Central Kansas League wrestling champion Hoisington eatned a pair of 3-1A fifth-place state medals with Eastin Redetzke (32-8, 120) and Cole Gilliland (41-5, 285). The Cardinals scored 43 points to place 14th.
Hoisington's No. 4 ranked Eastin Redetzke avenged an earlier bracket loss with a 9-5 fifth-place victory over Rawlins County's Ryan Sramek, who won the first meeting 5-3. Redetzke also defeated Caney Valley's Brayden Harris (2:20); Lyons' Dominic Davis (2:25) and Pleasant Ridge's Isaiah Kruse, 13-3. Republic County's A.J. Polansky defeated Redetzke, 5-4, in a consolation match.
"Eastin Redetzke lost at the wire in two matches," said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. "It was a razor-thin margin at state."
Hoisington's No. 2 ranked Josiah Ball (37-9, 126) encountered tough luck with a dislocated kneecap in a quarterfinal loss to Hoxie's Ochs. Ball was sidelined from the tournament.
"Josiah's was a fluke incident, where his knee was twisted in the wrong direction," Schmidt said. "He had a shot against Ochs. Josiah split matches against the state champion from Larned. He beat good wrestlers from Marysville and Hill City and beat a 4A Concordia wrestler.
The Cardinals won the Central Kansas League and were 3A regional runner-up.
"We're proud how our guys performed," Schmidt said. "They performed at a high level, winning league and placing runner-up at regionals. I credit our great assistant coaches because I've got good people working with me — Chris Ball, Jace Morgenstern, Joshua Ball and Ross Coomes. They helped us get better every day."
Hoisington's No. 4 ranked Gilliland placed fifth with a victory over Oskaloosa's Justin Miller (0:58). Gilliland defeated Chaparral's Carson Gates (2:18); Marysville's Garrison Craig, 4-1 and Rawlins County's Bearley (0:43). Hill City's No. 3 ranked Thayn Walt dropped Gilliland (2:28) in the quarterfinals. Norton's Corbin Puga downed Gilliland 4-0 in the consolation semifinals..
"Gilliland placed fifth, but had potential to place better," Schmidt said.
Halstead's No. 1 ranked Caleb Wise pinned Riley Philbern (2:29) in the 220-pound quarterfinals.
State champion Hoxie (186) finished 89 points ahead of runner-up Douglass.
