ST. LOUIS— The Royals-Cardinals game scheduled for Sunday was postponed after a 2 hour, 45 minute delay, the Royals’ third rainout this season.

No makeup date has been scheduled. The teams have common off-days on July 23 and Aug. 3. The date in July, a Thursday, probably makes the most sense because the Cardinals will be coming from Chicago the previous day and will start a homestand that Friday. The Royals will be in the middle of a homestand and just a 40-minute flight away.

Aug. 3 is less appealing because the Royals will be in Toronto the day before and would have to fly back to Detroit for a game the following day.

Royals manager Ned Yost said Chris Young, Sunday’s scheduled starter, will start on Tuesday in Milwaukee when right-hander Joe Blanton was supposed to start in place of the injured Jason Vargas. Right-hander Edinson Volquez will keep his start on Monday at Miller Park.

“We just wanted to give Chris an extra day to prepare for Milwaukee,” Yost said.

Young appreciated the gesture.

“It helps with studying the video and so forth,” Young said.

Blanton likely will go on Friday if right-hander Yordano Ventura is able to make his start on Wednesday against the Brewers at Kauffman Stadium.

What’s next: Volquez gets the ball for the opener of a two-game Interleague set against the Brewers tonight at 7:10 p.m. CT. Volquez is 5-1 career at Miller Park with a 4.88 ERA. He is coming off a 7-2 win over the Twins last Wednesday -- he went seven innings and gave up one run. The teams will meet for two games at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.
