 Panthers lose doubleheader

WICHITA – Great Bend’s Trent Stuhlsatz ignited the Panthers’ baseball season with a leadoff home run against Wichita Kapaun-Mt, Carmel.

But Stuhlsatz’s line-drive turned into a game-ending double play on baserunner Edwin Chavez in the Crusaders’ 8-7 victory. Kapaun-Mt. Carmel won the second game 7-1.

CRUSADERS 8, PANTHERS 7 (G1) – The Panthers featured a starting lineup of Stuhlsatz, Bradley Hopkins, Owen Kaiser,  Carson Umphres, J.J. Grove, Hunter Herrman, Ian Premer, Chavez and Koehn Ribordy.

Stuhlsatz drilled his leadoff homer and had two RBIs. Umphres singled home Hopkins for a 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders scored runs in four consecutive innings for a 7-2 lead after five innings off starter Umphres and reliever Slade Mohr.

The Panthers rallied with a 5-run sixth inning. Premer singled, Chavez walked and Ribordy singled. Premer scored on a Stuhlsatz’s sacrifice fly. Owen Kaiser singled home Chavez. Ribordy and Hopkins scored on a Carson Umphres double. Kaiser scored on a Schartz single for a 7-7 tie.

Stuhlsatz and Umphres each delivered two hits. Kaiser, Premer, Ribordy, Grove and Kaiser each had one hit.

CRUSADERS 7, PANTHERS 1 (G2) – LF Carson Poe, SS Grove and 3B Mohr joined CF Herrman, C Kaiser, RF Hopkins, 2B Chavez, 1B Stuhlsatz and CF Umphres in the second-game starting lineup.

Umphres hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Hopkins after a sixth-inning triple. Stuhlsatz and Kaiser singled in the first inning, but were stranded. Poe, Umphres and Hopkins also singled.

The Panthers' defense played superbly by turning double plays in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. SS Grove, 2B Chavez and 1B Stuhlsatz combined for a pair of double plays. Chavez, Grove and Stuhlsatz turned a 4-6-3 double play. CF Umphres, C Kaiser and 3B Mohr teamed for a second-inning double play.

Panther starter Herrman was tagged with the loss as he yielded three earned runs.
