Garden City man dies in rural Rush County crash Tuesday

An 87-year old Garden City man died after colliding head-on with another vehicle south of Rush Center Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Jospeh Homer Rainman, 87, of Garden City was traveling south on U.S. 183 about three miles south of Rush Center in a 2021 Chrysler passenger car, when a northbound 2017 Toyota passenger car driven by 19-year-old Olivia Grace Hanigan, also of Garden City, crossed the center line and struck Rainman’s vehicle head on. The reason for Hanigan’s vehicle crossing the center line was not given.

Both drivers were transported to Hays Medical Center. Rainman was pronounced deceased there. Hanigan suffered suspected minor injuries in the crash.

According to the report, Rainman was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, while Hanigan was properly restrained.
