A suspect was booked into the Barton County Jail on Thursday on charges that include rape and aggravated kidnapping, Great Bend Police Chief Steve Haulmark reported.

A news release was issued Friday afternoon by the Great Bend Police Department, stating that the suspect is Jacob Behnke, 24. There was no information about where he is from.

According to the report, GBPD officers responded to a domestic violence call in Great Bend just after noon on March 14. Officers later executed a search warrant at the residence in connection to this investigation and items of evidence were recovered at the scene.

Behnke was believed to be in the Claflin area and was later located in Rice County. Sheriff’s deputies and police officers responded to the area and arrested Behnke, who was driving at the time, and impounded the vehicle as evidence pending a search warrant.

He was transported to the Barton County Detention Center where records show he was initially booked on charges of rape, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and criminal threat, with bond set at $500,000 cash or surety. However, the police report there have been additional charges of aggravated kidnapping and harassment by telephone, and that Behnke is being held in lieu of $1 million bond.

The GBPD was assisted in the investigation by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office and the Family Crisis Center in Great Bend, Haulmark said.

This incident is still an ongoing investigation. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crimestoppers or the Great Bend Police Department or online at p3tips.com.
