Fatal collision reported in Stafford County

A St. John man died and a woman and child from Kinsley were taken to the Stafford County Hospital after vehicles collided at 9:09 a.m. Saturday in Stafford County.

Kansas Highway Patrol reported the crash occurred on U.S. 50 at milepost 190, near NW 30th Avenue. A 2007 Pontiac Vibe driven by Michiel De Jongh, 25, of St. John, was southbound on NW 30th Avenue and did not stop at the stop sign for U.S. 50. The Vibe was hit by a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Heather Renee Smith-Arensman, 45, from Kinsley, that was traveling east on U.S. 50. Both vehicles went into the southbound ditch and came to rest.

De Jongh, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injury.

Smith-Arensman was taken to the hospital with suspected serious injury while her passenger, 10-year-old Taylor Arensman, was taken to the hospital with suspected minor injury. Both were wearing safety restraints.
