Donald Young 1959 - 2023

HUTCHINSON - Donald Dwayne Young, 63, of Hutchinson, Kan., passed away April 23, 2023, at his home. Don was born May 9, 1959, to Virgil and Joan (Castleberry) Young in Pratt, Kan.

After moving to various cities, his family settled in St. John, Kan., where he graduated from St. John High School in 1978. Don attended Kansas State University. He went on to complete Fire Service Training from the University of Kansas in 1984. Don moved to Hutchinson, Kan., in 1984 and began working as a Reno County Fireman. Don returned to St. John for a brief period to work at English Oil Company. Don would eventually become a salesperson for Business Systems Inc, where he worked for 21 years. After his time at BSI, Don worked at B & K Medical and most recently for Siemens Gamesa, all in Hutchinson, Kan. It was in Hutchinson where Don met and then married Jan (Whetzel) Young on June 27, 1987. Together they raised two sons, Daryn and Dylan Young. Don’s number one goal was then to be an involved and loving father. He cherished time with his sons, coaching youth sports teams, providing amenities on school playgrounds, in general, fully participating and supporting any and all endeavors.

Don is survived by his mother, Joan (Castleberry) Young, St. John his sons Daryn Young (Dana Stumpff), Overland Park and Dylan Young, Overland Park his sisters, Stephanie (Ronald) Ahrens, Ellinwood and Debbie Levingston, Great Bend his brother, Steve (Velda) Young, St. John and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. He is preceded in death by his father, Virgil Young and Brother-In-Law Joe Levingston.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday June 10, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory with inurnment to follow at 2 p.m. in Fairview Park Cemetery in St. John, Kan. Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday with family present at Elliott Mortuary. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays beginning May 1 at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The YMCA of Hutchinson and Reno County for Youth Sports and Programs, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory. 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, Kan., 67501.
