TOPEKA - Lloyd “Sonny” Pinon, Topeka, Kansas, passed away on September 16, 2021, surrounded by his immediate family after a short but courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born April 7, 1949, to Basil Spires Pinon. His father, also Lloyd Pinon, was killed in an accident before Lloyd was born. Basil remarried in 1950 and Jess Griffin was Lloyd’s dad until his death in 1984--and you’d better not call him stepdad. Those were fighting words!
Lloyd attended school in Hoisington from kindergarten through high school and graduated from Kansas State Teacher’s College in 1971. He married JoLana Dietz earlier that year. They made their home in Topeka where they were blessed with four children, Rachel (Lucas) Dickerson, Jason (Kelsey) Pinon, April (Matthew) Anderson, and Haley (Austin) Wingerson. The best was yet to come with bonus granddaughter, Taylor and the births of Henry, Calvin, Simon, William, Lily, Olivia, and Laney. Kylie is expected in early 2022.
Lloyd is also survived by his siblings Becky (Gary) Townsley, Jo (Don) Plinsky, Bonny (Chip) Wohlcke, Steve (Kayla) Griffin, Belva (Dave) Prins; and sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Ron) Baron and Carma (John) Deutsch; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, their spouses and children. Also mourning his passing are past and present members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church “OSLC” and his many golfing buddies.
Lloyd will be lovingly remembered for his kind spirit, generous with both his time and effort. Whenever a hand was needed, he was the first to volunteer and the last to leave. He was commonly known as “Jolly Lloyd” and carried that legacy to the very end.
A celebration of life will be held at Lake Shawnee Shelter House #4 on Monday, September 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. Lloyd’s memorial service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church on Tuesday, September 21 at 10 a.m. Inurnment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that all attendees please wear masks. Lloyd’s service will be live streamed on the Church’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/oursaviorslutheranchurchtopeka.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, which will be designated to music and worship, and sent to OSLC, 2021 SW 29th St, Topeka, KS 66611.
Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent online to www.kevinbrennanfamily.com.
