Barton wraps up 4-0 weekend at Odessa

For the second time this season, the Barton volleyball team finished off a weekend classic with a perfect record.
This time the Cougars finished 4-0 at Odessa over the weekend. The sweep improves Barton to 13-3 overall on the season and riding a 5-match winning streak.
After earning a pair of wins on Friday, Barton came back Saturday to sweep Cedar Valley College then won a thrilling match over New Mexico Military in five sets to close out the weekend.
Barton defeated Cedar Valley 25-23, 25-11, 25-22 Saturday morning then concluded the weekend with a 25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9 win over the Broncos.
“We went out and got the job done,” Coach Brandon Stephenson said. “We kept our focus pretty good the entire weekend, which sets up a big week for us this week.”
Barton had to do a little work in two of the sets to beat the Dallas area Suns in the opener. The win saw a lot of players who haven’t seen a lot of court time get their court time for the Cougars as Cedar Valley fell to 1-11.
Brittany Ostmeyer, Hannah Beam, Shayde LeClair and Averie Warehime all recorded seven kills for the Cougars in the easy win. Micaela Jellison added five.
Jeri Garcia and Leah Fisher both had seven assists for Barton while Warehime finished with four aces. Lydia Konrade finished with 11 digs.
The Cougars had to work for their perfect weekend in the win the win over New Mexico Military.
“We just wanted it more the last two sets,” Coach Stephenson said. “They were tall. They could go 6-1 or taller across the front the entire game. That gave us problems as we fell behind but we adjusted and got the job done.”
Nathalia Gouveia led the Barton hitting attack in the win as Barton rallied from down 2-1 in sets. Gouveia finished the afternoon match with 19 kills followed by Olivia Naccarato with 16 and Monique Oliveira with 10.
Carolina Goncalves was back in charge of the setting, recording 45 assists in the win. Oliveira added 15 digs to the effort while Naccarato and Warehime finished with seven blocks and Oliveira with six.
The Broncos finished the weekend 2-2 and are 7-5 overall on the season. New Mexico Military did defeated Pratt while at the event and lost to Seward as the Broncos played three Jayhawk schools.
The Cougars have three big Jayhawk Conference games this week as they settle into the grind of conference play.
Barton is currently 2-1 in the Jayhawk with matches against Colby (3-1, 10-1), Pratt (0-2, 5-9), and Hutchinson (3-0, 7-4) this week.
