PAWNEE HEIGHTS 67, ASHLAND 65

ASHLAND — Pawnee Heights' Alec Carlson scored 25 points and Adam Hands scored 23 points as the Tigers survived a wild 67-65 Southern Plains Iroquois basketball victory over Ashland.

Braden Colglazier converted four clutch free throws and Carlson made one free throw in the final minute. Ashland's Kash McPhail and Jose Amaya both missed game-tying free throws and the Bluejays missed their final shot in the final 15 seconds. Kash McPhail converted two baskets in the final minute.

The Tigers (3-2) outscored the Bluejays 21-9 from 3-point range. The Tigers and Ashland each scored 24 fourth-quarter points. Ashland outscored the Tigers 18-10 in the final 41/2 minutes.

ASHLAND — Ashland's red-hot MacKenzie Walker converted 7 of 9 three-pointers and scored 28 points to spark the Bluejays past Pawnee Heights 55-46 in Friday's Southern Plains Iroquois basketball game. Walker hit four 3-pointers after halftime. Ashland converted 9 of 12 three-pointers.

Pawnee Heights (2-1) was led by Jaden Carlson with 17 points and Olivia Hands added 14 points.

CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 56, HAVEN 22

HAVEN — Central Plains Oiler Brynna Hammeke scored 19 points and hot-shooting Jennah Jeffrey added 17 points as the No. 1 ranked 1A Oilers dominated Haven 56-22.

Central Plains jumped out to a 10-0 lead and dominated defensively with ball-hawking defense. Several steals led to easy transition baskets. The Oilers led 17-2 after one quarter and 31-10 at halftime.

“Defensively we were really good tonight. Our kids did a great job talking on defense and moving and communicating to get to the shooters," said Oiler coach Pat Stiles. " I was pleased by our performance on defense. I didn’t expect to come out like that against Haven which has been playing well."

The Oilers finished the job with an 11-0 fourth period for a 34-point victory. Haven's Carlee Arnold scored 14 points.

STAFFORD — Macksville freshman Mayce Russell contributed 18 points and six steals as the Mustangs rolled past Stafford's girls 55-38 in Friday's non-league basketball showdown. Lupita Galan scored 10 points. Abi Ibarra grabbed eight rebounds with six points.

Stafford's Emily Green scored 16 points with 10 rebounds and three assists.

HAVEN — Haven's Zeke Craft scored 13 points and the Wildcats roared past Central Plains 76-27 in a non-league basketball game. The Wildcats (5-1) powered past the Oilers (1-5) for quick transition baskets off turnovers. Haven used a 19-0 scoring run to break the game open.

HESSTON 57, ST. JOHN 29

ST. JOHN — The 3A Hesston Swathers rode full-court pressure defense to throttle St. John 57-29 in Friday's non-league basketball game.

Hesston sprinted to a 21-7 first-quarter lead sparked by Brayden Schilling's 10 points. The sterling defense continued for a 35-11 halftime lead. The Tigers held tougher after halftime after getting outscored 22-18.

St. John's Uriel Calleros scored 12 points. Elijah Delp grabbed nine rebounds and Edwin Fernandez dished out two assists. The Tigers committed 24 turnovers and converted 10 of 27 field goals.

"We have one of the hardest schedules in 1A this year.  We play Hesston, Sterling, and a couple of other 3A teams,” said St. John coach Danton Hilton.  “We played badly in stretches, but we also played well in stretches. If we played as hard as tonight, the results would be different.”

Hesston's Cason Richardson and Nick Arnold scored 13 points apiece.

ST. JOHN — Defensive-minded Hesston outscored St. John 17-3 to rally for a hard-fought 29-25 non-league basketball victory over the Tigers.

St. John led 13-8 at halftime as Payton Meyer and Heidi Fisher each converted a 3-pointer. But Hesston's aggressive defense spun the momentum with a 17-3 scoring burst for a 25-16 lead. The Tigers (3-3) sliced the lead to 29-25 behind Darby Smith's 12 points.

Hesston (2-3) was led by Katy Kueker with eight points.

OTIS — LaCrosse featured four starters in double figures to roar past Otis-Bison 64-33 in Friday's Central Prairie League basketball game. LaCrosse (4-2) placed Haden Sherman (17), Bryce Conner (16), Gage Burk (11) and Chase Schmidt (10) in double figures. 

Otis-Bison (3-2) was sparked by Jayce Kohls and Ethan Schneider with 11 points apiece. The Cougars were outscored 24-9 in the third period.
