LAKE BARTON – Hoisington's state qualifier Kamden Tarlton wasn't intimidated by last year's 5A state cross country runner-up Kaleb Glazier (16:18.1). Tarlton kept pace with Glazier for quite a while over the 3.1-mile Lake Barton course.

Tarlton's time (17:09.0) would've placed 11th in the 4-6A division. Tarlton placed 22nd in last year's 3A state cross country meet at Lawrence's Rim Rock.

"I was pretty much on target for the first race of the season. I improved by a minute from last year, but missed my goal of 17 minutes. I paced off a Hays runner, but had to pace off some Garden City runners. I could've picked my pace up a little on my second mile. I plan to breaking the school record (15:53.0). Our guys ran great today."

Tarlton's teammates also ran solid races after just missing a 3A team berth last year. Runner-up Eli Lewis (19:54.0); Michael Hipp (19:54.3); Landon Beaver (21:51.6); and Kasey Andereck (22:27.7) also counted in the team scores.

Great Bend's 27th-place Ramirez (18:15.5) and 29th Tavon Stroup (18:18.9) joined 40th Alex Galindo (,18:39.7) and 63rd Braylon Moore (19:33.2). Suppes improved by 1:39 and Moore improved 1:31.

"When we compare times, they're a minute to two minutes faster," said Great Bend coach Lyles Lashley. "It speaks volumes for the summer work they've invested. We want to keep rolling."
