DODGE CITY – Great Bend pitcher Carson Umphres was spectacular with a 2-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in a tense 1-0 baseball victory over Dodge City. In the nightcap, reliever Owen Kaiser threw 31/3 innings for a 5-4 victory in Friday’s Western Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Great Bend (15-5, 4-2 WAC) maintains a top four 5A Western seed and drops Dodge City to 6-12, 2-4 WAC.
PANTHERS 1, DODGE CITY 0 (G1) – Umphres struck out Chris Ruiz and right fielder Daxton Minton caught Layton Blatnick’s fly ball to strand Liam Torrez and Max Gonzalez after a seventh-inning walk and single. Umphres (5-1, 2.23 ERA) has recorded 51 strikeouts in 44 innings.
The Panthers scored an unearned runs when Minton sprinted home when shortstop Ty Scheck misplayed Umphres’ third-inning groundball with two out. Dodge City pitcher Remmington Miller (3-2, 1.13 ERA) was brilliant with 12 strikeouts. He retired the Panthers in order four times and the final nine batters made outs.
PANTHERS 5, DODGE CITY 4 (G2) – Great Bend’s Kaiser (3-2, 3.38 ERA) threw 31/2 solid innings. Kaiser entered with a bases-loaded fourth-inning jam left by starter Hunter Herrman. He struck out Scheck to retire the side.
Panther Trenton Kern drilled the game-winning 2-run homer that scored Kaiser after a walk for a 5-3 lead. Xavier Fernandez scored Dodge City’s fifth-inning run on a groundout.
Great Bend led 2-0 when Minton and Slade More scored on a second-inning error. Fernandez scored on a Panther error. Fernandez singled in Miller and Scheck for a 3-2 lead after three innings.
Mohr scored on Minton’s fourth-inning groundout for a 3-3 tie.
After 20 games, Ian Premer is batting .454 (25 for 55); Kern .383 (18 for 47); Umphres .379 (22 for 58); J.J. Grove .356 (21 for 59); and Koehn Ribordy .356 (21 for 59).
