The 10-and-under Quicksilver softball team finished second at their home Amateur Softball Association tournament on Saturday at the City of Great Bend Sports Complex.
Clay Center finished first, beating Quicksilver 7-6 in a final-inning rally.
“They were up 4-1 on us, but we were able to battle back to 6-4,” Quicksilver head coach Randy Moyers said. “We went into that last inning needing three outs, but they had a couple of crucial hits. They pulled it out.”
It is the fourth second-place finish for Quicksilver.
“We were second in Russel and second here,” Moyers said. “We were second in Pratt, and I think we got second in Salina, too. You know, we’re close. We want that first place.”
The Great Bend team beat the Larned Renegades 7-2 to open the tournament. Quicksilver toppled Concordia 11-3 in the final game to finish second.
Moyers said that his team’s starting pitchers and catchers played well.
“Jenna Mauler, Malory Teichman and Shanaeia Mehlhoff were our starters,” Moyers said. “They each did a great job for us. Our two catchers Teichman and Kaylee Unruh both did a great job, too.
“Our catchers caught some baserunners stealing today. That’s huge for a 10-and-under team to have a couple catchers who can throw out runners.”
Quicksilver travels to Dodge City on Saturday for a two-day tournament.
