BY THE UNOFFICIAL OILER
CLAFLIN — Central Plains roared past St. John 58-0 to earn third place in the Oilers' 8-man District 7 football victory. The Oilers (6-2) open the 8-man Division 1 playoffs at Stanton County (2-6).
Senior Night is supposed to be about celebrating the players who have given their time, talent and heart to the Central Plains Oilers.
Friday night, the Oilers gave those seniors a few more things to celebrate during their 58-0 win over the St. John Tigers.
And if the Tigers were hoping for a quiet evening, they probably should have checked the schedule twice.
The Oilers came out firing at home, scoring early and often in a first half that felt less like a football game and more like a very determined checklist of ways to reach the end zone.
Jimmy Soeken got things started, running in a touchdown and adding the two-point conversion. The defense held St. John to a turnover on downs, and the Oilers went right back to work.
Richard Hayes hauled in a pass and pushed toward the goal line before being brought down just short. The next pass found Hayes again, this time for the touchdown. Keeton Robison added the two-point conversion for a 16-0 lead.
The Tigers couldn’t find much breathing room against the Oiler defense. Meanwhile, Soeken kept running, breaking off another big gain with a key block from Huxton Rogers helping clear the way.
Brodie Crites connected with Teagan Schepmann for another touchdown, and Soeken added another two-point conversion.
With 3:55 still left in the first quarter, the Oilers led 24-0. Yes, there was still plenty of first quarter left.
Keeton Robison then returned a punt to the Tiger 25-yard line. Broc Klima punched it into the end zone, and Robison added two more points.
The scoreboard read 32-0 with 2:25 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Oilers weren’t finished. A squib kickoff—a low, bouncing kick designed to make the return difficult—turned into another opportunity when the Tigers fumbled and Central Plains recovered.
Klima promptly ripped off a 34-yard run, taking the ball to the Tiger 2-yard line.
On fourth down, Crites ran in the touchdown. A pass to Robison, helped by a key block from Schepmann, made it 40-0.
The score was 40-0 with four seconds left in the first quarter…yep four seconds. At this point, the scoreboard operator deserved a water break.
After the Tigers struggled to get a punt away, the Oilers took over near the St. John 11-yard line. On fourth down, Richard Hayes lined up at quarterback, scrambled and ran in another touchdown. He added the two-point conversion himself. Central Plains led 48-0.
Then came one of the night’s stranger moments. On the kickoff, the Tiger returner mishandled the ball, which rolled all the way to the 1-yard line. In a moment of football confusion, the returner touched the ball, allowing an Oiler to recover it.
The Oilers were suddenly knocking on the door again. The Tiger quarterback was chased out of the pocket, and a throwaway resulted in an intentional-grounding penalty in the end zone. That meant a safety—two points for the Oilers without even needing to cross the goal line. The score was 50-0.
After a long completion from QB Layton Hoffman to Soeken helped move the ball, a penalty pushed the Tigers closer to their own goal line. The Oilers smallest player Jackson Schartz took a handoff, and the Oilers continued working their way toward the end zone.
On third-and-25, Hoffman connected with Soeken for a big gain. A Tiger encroachment penalty moved the ball inside the 2-yard line, where Cameron Grubb ran it in for the touchdown.
Then came the play that deserves a replay and possibly its own movie trailer.
The Oilers attempted a flea-flicker for the 2-point conversion. It’s a trick play that uses a handoff and a backward pitchout to fool the defense before throwing the ball downfield.
Hoffman handed off to Schartz and Schartz ended up throwing to a wide-open Peyton Dody for the conversion. The Oilers led 58-0 with 4:07 remaining in the first half.
St. John made one more attempt to move the ball, but pressure and great defense by Dody & Jake Slessinger time ran out before the Tigers could score.
The 45-point rule ended the game at halftime, giving Central Plains a 58-0 shutout on senior night.
It was a memorable way to close the regular season at home: a big win, contributions from across the roster and a crowd that got plenty of reasons to cheer.
But beyond the touchdowns and the scoreboard, senior night was about recognizing the players who have put in the work, represented their school and helped build this team. The Oilers gave them a night to remember.
Now the regular season is in the books, and the stakes get bigger from here. The Oilers are heading into the postseason with momentum, confidence and one very loud reminder of what this team can do when everything clicks.
Seniors, enjoy this one. Your entire team delivered great plays tonight and you’ve earned it. And Oilers? Keep that fire burning.
