WICHITA — The Great Bend High School girls’ soccer team began its season in style, beating Haysville Campus 4-1 to open the Wichita Titan Classic on Wednesday.
The Lady Panthers led 4-0 going into the final 10 minutes, but the Lady Colts got a goal to wipe away the shutout.
“We seemed kind of nervous in the first half,” head coach Gus Prieto said. “In the last 20 minutes in the first half, they calmed down and we controlled the ball. After the first goal, we really started to calm down.”
Junior midfielder Brandy Schnnider scored the Lady Panthers’ first goal on a corner kick from Cristina Hernandez.
Great Bend’s second and third goals happened nearly the same way. Judith Carrera put the Lady Panthers up 2-0 when a pass from Mayra Sanchez got past the defense.
“She got a pass past the defense from Mayra Sanchez,” Prieto said. “Then she was one-on-one with the goalie, and she beat the goalie.”
The third goal occurred in the same manner with Berenice Prieto feeding Sandy Hernandez the ball and Hernandez burying the ball into the net.
Great Bend left the pitch ahead 3-0 at halftime.
Senior midfielder Rubi Torres scored the Lady Panthers’ final goal with the assist going to Schnnider.
Great Bend will be back in action on Wednesday night, playing host Wichita South at 6:15. Wichita South opened the classic by beating Liberal 5-0.
