Arlen Schroeder may not have been born in Great Bend, but after investing thousands of hours into volunteer work over the last 17 years, he possesses a profound understanding of his adopted hometown that rivals that of lifelong residents.

In August of this year, Schroeder garnered recognition for an impressive 2,000 hours of volunteer service for the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. His altruistic contributions extend beyond the Chamber, as he also consistently volunteers at the Barton County Historical Society Museum and has actively participated in various other organizations throughout the years.

Notably, Schroeder is an engaged member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and a keen participant in the Great Bend Kiwanis Club.

Expressing his motivation, Schroeder stated, “I firmly believe in staying informed and engaged. While some might remain unaware, I feel it’s my duty to be in the know. My mother always emphasized that if one chooses to be part of something, they should truly commit to it.”

His involvements have undoubtedly provided him with the opportunity to connect with a multitude of individuals. Although his origins trace back to Leavenworth, Schroeder’s life path intertwined with Gwen Glenn’s, a native of Ellinwood, when they tied the knot. Reflecting on their journey, he humorously shared, “Gwen insists that I once mentioned returning here after we both retired. While I don’t recall saying it, I do know that I’ve enjoyed 48 years of marriage by mastering the two magical words, ‘Yes, dear.’”

Their family includes two daughters, Loretta Schroeder and Gabe Ravenstein, both residing in Great Bend, and a son Adam who lives in Boston, Mass. The family has been blessed with seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, along with two younger grandchildren.

Chamber board members, staff and friends orchestrated a surprise birthday and celebration event in honor of Arlen Schroeder’s impressive 2,000 hours of volunteer service with the Great Bend Chamber. During this event, Chamber Board Chair Shelly Peacock and Vice Chair Rob Bauer presented Schroeder with a plaque, designating him an honorary Chamber member for his unwavering dedication and hard work.
