Students enrolled in Ken Botzung’s honors biology course at Great Bend High School now benefit from the use of a growth cart thanks to the financial support of Midwest Energy.
According to Botzung, the cart will allow students to run independent research projects, also known as student-designed labs, as a part of their coursework.
“The growth cart is a necessary and versatile addition to my classroom, especially considering my interior classroom has no windows,” said Botzung. “Different from labs students have completed in my class or other courses, the student-designed lab requires the student to develop the process from start to finish. Including the selection of a plant-based research topic, conducting research, writing a formal lab report, and presenting the findings to their peers.”
A $500 grant from Midwest Energy covered half of the cost of the growth cart.
