GBHS football game canceled after player tests positive

A student on the Great Bend High School Panther football team has tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 10. According to USD 428 Public Information Director Andrea Bauer, coaches were notified Sunday that this Friday’s home football game with Goddard Eisenhower High School has been canceled. Fifty-seven football players are expected to receive quarantine orders, as well as eight additional students who were determined to be in close contact with the student in classes.

Students are expected to return to school on Oct. 21 when their quarantine ends.

Great Bend USD 428 reports it received three COVID-19 notifications on Saturday, including the aforementioned GBHS student. The other two notifications were that a staff member at GBHS and a student at Lincoln Elementary School had tested positive. No additional quarantines were expected in the schools from either of those cases.

On Sunday, USD 428 was notified that two staff members at Eisenhower Elementary had tested positive. In the first case, 18 students and 10 staff were expected to receive quarantine orders due to close contact. In the second case, three additional students were expected to receive quarantine orders.

Monday, one staff member tested positive, impacting two schools. Five students at Lincoln Elementary and four students at Great Bend Middle School were expected to receive quarantine orders.

When there is a positive COVID-19 case at Great Bend USD 428, the district contacts families and staff identified as close contacts and informs the local health department. The district does not inform of quarantine orders for students or staff due to exposure outside of the school.
