Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! We have plenty of exciting upcoming events this week. Today, we have our regular genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m. Following that we have the perfect autumn treat at 3 p.m. for those in grades 6-12, an Over the Garden Wall Watch Party! Join us to watch the show that oozes autumn charm and even paint your own rock so you, too, can entertain your friends with rock facts. Later this evening, Dry Lake Brewing is hosting our Halloween Trivia at 7 p.m. Test your knowledge of everything spooky, from pumpkins to Halloween movies, for a chance to win fabulous prizes and free beer!
This Friday is our next session of our Tabletop Teens’ Under the Crooked Moon campaign takes place from 3:45-7 p.m. Our table is full, but those who didn’t get a spot as a player are welcome to come watch the action unfold as part of the audience (no registration required). Last time, our adventurers boarded the Ghostlight Express with no memories of who they are. But instead of getting to sit back and enjoy the train ride, the conductor has asked them to help some of the passengers resolve their unfinished business so they don’t attack the train before it reaches Druskenwald. Join us to see if they can help the ghostly passengers move on before it’s too late!
Saturday, we have two events. First is our next meeting of the History Book Club at 10:30 a.m. This time we will be discussing “The Light of Battle” by Michel Pardis. The novel “paints a vivid portrait of Dwight Eisenhower as he learns to navigate the crosscurrents of diplomacy, politics, strategy, family, and fame with the fate of the free world hanging in the balance. In a world of giants — Churchill, Roosevelt, De Gaulle, Marshall, MacArthur — it was a barefoot boy from Abilene, Kansas, who would master the art of power and become a modern-day George Washington.”
After that, we have a special guest coming to give a lecture on genealogy. Kathleen Reid Rippel will show us where to find both U.S. federal and state censuses, U.K. censuses, and substitutes for those years that might not be available. She will also share tips and tricks about search strategies to help find names with difficult spellings and troubleshoot other problems.
Monday, Oct. 26, is our next Crafternoon. We are partnering with Barton Community College this fall as we continue our “Creating with the Masters” series. Jenna Harbaugh, the acting director of the Shafer Art Gallery, will be our guest art teacher as we offer experiences in printmaking, canvas painting, and possibly clay sculpting. This time we will be painting. Supplies are limited. Registration is appreciated but not required. If you would like to save your spot, please visit greatbendpl.info to get started.
Tuesday, Oct. 27, is our Halloween Carnival! Our annual morning of fun will start at 10:30 a.m. Come dressed in costumes to win treats by playing carnival-style games. After that we have Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m. and Writing Club from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for our Novelvember Final Countdown meeting.
Wednesday is our last Tweentober event! Too old for story time but not quite a teen yet? Get a chance to hang out in the Teen Spot on Wednesdays this October. Each week we will have a different teen program for tweens grades 3-5 to try out. This week, try out a mini version of our Manga & Anime Club at 3:45 p.m. Join us to watch and discuss the first episode of “Tokyo Mew Mew” before making origami animals (title subject to change).
Join our new Stitch Society Crochet Club for adults and learn from experienced fiber artists how to stitch together adorable creations. No experience is necessary. During the introductory lesson on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. we will learn the basics of crochet and get started on making Mothman-inspired amigurumi critters. “In a small town, the elusive (creature) watches over dark forests. With this crochet kit, bring the legend to life, crafting the mysterious figure with glowing eyes and wings.” (Crochetbox). After the first meeting, we invite you to come back at the same time the following week to work on your project. Staff will be available to help. Sign up online at greatbendpl.info.
Teens, put your knowledge to the test as you face off against our librarians in a night of trivia on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. Will this be the year the teens finally beat the librarians? Walk-ins are welcome, but pizza will be provided for teens who preregister online at greatbendpl.info/teens.
