STERLING — A timeless myth. An unforgettable journey. A talented cast. Meet the SC performers bringing “Eurydice” to life on stage at Sterling College Theatre.
“Eurydice” takes the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and reimagines it through the eyes of its heroine. The play by Sarah Ruhl will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8.
Technical Director Stephen English is both directing and designing the play. He comments: “I am excited about the opportunity to see students challenge their vocal skills, and to see how the audience engages with the story and the characters in the story.”
With a small cast of seven, the reimagined classic myth includes breathtaking visual effects, inventive plot twists, and a tale of love that surpasses time. Eurydice must journey through the underworld, trying to remember who she loved, and meets interesting characters along the way. “Eurydice” also presents some unique tech challenges with the set, including a raining elevator and a wading pool.
Makenzy Carter, a senior from Wichita, plays the heroine, Eurydice. Freshman Alexander Geopfert from Derby plays her lover Orpheus. Chandler Reiman from Kinsley plays the Father, and freshman Daniel Hawkinson from Hutchinson plays “Nasty Interesting Man” and the Lord of the Underworld. The chorus consists of senior Kim Skirvin from Emporia, playing Little Stone, Cristian Vargui from London, England, playing Big Stone, and freshman Casey Dykstra from Wichita playing Loud Stone.
The show will be presented in Culbertson Auditorium on the Sterling College campus. Online tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students at www.sterling.edu/arts. Tickets will also be available at the door, $12 for adults and $5 for students.
