A Hutchinson man was flown to a Wichita hospital Monday morning after a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 56, four miles east of Great Bend.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office reports Garrett McConnell, 31, was driving west in a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo that crossed the center line to the south side of the road, hit a culvert post and continued traveling west as it slid into the north ditch, hitting the embankment at NE 40 Ave. and rolling 2.5 times, coming to rest on its roof. The time of the accident is unknown, but the vehicle was discovered shortly before 7:15 a.m. When responders arrived, McConnell was out of the vehicle, but it was not known if he had been ejected.

A spokesman for Via Christi Health’s St. Francis Hospital said McConnell was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon.

Kansas Highway Patrol assisted, and Great Bend Fire Department Ambulance transported McConnell to the Great Bend Municipal Airport for transport via air ambulance.
