Mathew Cooley of Hoisington was taken to Great Bend Regional Hospital with a possible head injury after a one-vehicle accident Monday on U.S. 281.

According to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, Cooley was a passenger in a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Calvin Hinz, Hoisington. Hinz was northbound in the 700 block of U.S. 281 at 8:01 a.m. when he fell asleep. He woke up as the Explorer was straddling the shoulder and grass; it then struck a mailbox. The driver over-corrected, causing the Explorer to cross the highway and enter the west ditch, where it hit a culvert and rolled one complete time. The driver was not injured.

Hoisington Emergency Medical Service responded and transported Cooley to Great Bend. Another passenger, Art Herron, did not complain of injuries. All three were wearing seat belts.
