The area Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors will hold auditions next week and the following Sunday, for the second annual Barton County’s Got Talent dinner theater. The program, on Jan. 15, 2011, will be a fun, local spin-off on the TV show "America’s Got Talent," sponsors said.

Audition sessions will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday and 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Grace Community Church, 210 McKinley St. The church is also the host site for this year’s dinner theater.

Singers, dancers, comedians, poets, actors and "any other sort of talented individual(s)" are wanted for the show, which will help raise money for Habitat’s next building project, said Rachel Mawhirter, event organizer. Mawhirter and David Hart serve as co-chairs for the Barton County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building decent and affordable housing. Since it started eight years ago, the Barton County Habitat has built two homes in Great Bend and one in Hoisington, and mortgaged those homes to qualifying families. Money repaid by the homeowners helps fund future projects, Mawhirter said.

The group hopes to start its fourth project next spring, either building a new house or rehabilitating an existing house.

"There is a great need for adequate housing in our community," Hart said. "Our dinner theater fundraiser will be a fun and entertaining way to raise funds and awareness for our upcoming projects. Individuals who participate in our variety show competition can take pride knowing that not only are they having fun performing for a live audience, but they’re also helping a worthy non-profit agency make a difference in our community.

"Our acts will compete for the chance to win prizes, but everyone who participates is guaranteed the satisfaction of providing a home for a family in Barton County."

Although the auditions are held at a local church, auditioning acts do not have to be religious in nature.
