Brownback to speak at BCC graduation ceremony

Barton Community College’s 43rd commencement is set for 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, in the Barton Gymnasium.  
After a brief welcome from College President Dr. Carl Heilman, the graduating class of 2013, their families and friends will be treated to a message from Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, who is the guest speaker at this year’s commencement ceremony.
Brownback  began his political career when he became the Kansas secretary of agriculture in 1986. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994 and landed a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1996. He was reelected to a full six-year term in 1998 and again in 2004. Brownback was elected the 46th governor of Kansas in 2010 and took office in January 2011.
Mike Johnson, chairman of the BCC Board of Trustees, will confer the degrees. Vice President of Instruction and Student Services Dr. Penny Quinn will present the graduates, and trustees will award the diplomas.
Dean of Student Services Angie Maddy will present Barton’s 2013 Outstanding Graduates, Jessica Lopez and Mayra Selene Sanchez Lujan, who will address their fellow graduates. Lopez, of Ellis, will transfer to Wichita State University in the fall to study Early Childhood and minor in sign language. Lujan, of Great Bend, will transfer to Kansas State University to study biochemistry.
The Barton Community College Foundation will honor Mary Cohen with the Distinguished Service Award, which is given to an individual or individuals who have shown genuine regard for the college through volunteer service and/or acts of philanthropy.
The Rev. Dr. Joan Harrington, ordained pastor and associate faculty at the college, will give the commencement invocation and benediction.
A reception for graduates and their families will take place in the Student Union following the ceremony.
