Barton County residents have an opportunity to get involved in local government as the county prepares for a variety of local elections, coming up this spring, according to County Clerk Donna Zimmerman.
She explained that filings for open county offices will remain open until noon on Jan. 25 for the election to be held April 15.
If there are enough filings in a particular office that a primary is required, that will be held on March 1.
There will be elections for:
• All of the county district school boards.
• Mayor and council members in Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, Claflin, Albert, Galatia, Olmitz, Pawnee Rock and Susank.
• Barton Community College trustee positions.
• Board of directors of Ellinwood District Hospital.
Anyone running for Great Bend or Hoisington city offices should file with their city clerks. In the other communities, candidates can file at the city or county clerk offices. The school boards, trustees and Ellinwood District Hospital positions also file at the County Clerk’s Office in the courthouse, Zimmerman explained.
There are filing fees, but they are not expensive, she added.
Filing for Great Bend City Council and the Ellinwood District Hospital board cost $10.
All of the rest of the positions cost $5, according to Zimmerman.
