Getting ready City of Great Bend Utility Superintendent Charles Suchy and City Sanitarian Gregg Vannoster survey a pile of about 400 old tires already collected at the Great Bend Compost Site Friday morning. The city-wide tire clean-up effort starts Monday and runs through Oct. 28. The public is asked to bring their tires to the site, located at 97 SW 5 Ave., a half mile south of Railroad Avenue across from The Rack restaurant. It will be monitored by city employees to make sure no unwanted tires are left. Only non-rotten passenger car and light truck tires up to 10 ply and up to 12-inch tread width including tires on rims will be accepted. All persons bringing tires must show proof of residency within the city limits of Great Bend (current utility bill or drivers license). There is no charge to leave tires. The drop-off location is at the back of the compost facility, and there will be monitors and signs directing people to it. Also pictured is a map showing the location of the area. The city is working with Western Ag Enterprises to recycle the tires.
