Barton County Area Habitat for Humanity is looking for the right family to help get into their own home, according to Barry Bowers, one of the directors of the local organization.
Things are in place to get started on the next Habitat project here — except for the selection of a family to live in a new home, Bowers said.
“We have a lot at just north of 19th and Hubbard and the foundation is already in place for a three bedroom house. 
“We have the funds ready but do not have a family yet. 
“We’ve had some applications but none so far have qualified,” Bowers explained.
He said not everyone meets the criteria that the organization requires.
“We look at four areas. 
“First is need. We are looking to get someone out of a sub-standard housing situation. Maybe it’s too crowded, too expensive or just not safe.
“Second, the family has to have enough resources to pay back the cost of the house. We finance the home to them for our cost. The loan is repaid over 20-25 years with no interest. All of the payments go back into our fund to build future homes.
“Third, the family has to willing to partner with us. They will put in 400 hours of ‘sweat equity’ and complete some home-owner related courses. 
“Fourth, we have income guidelines.” 
According to information from Habitat, “The percentage of your monthly income that you currently spend on housing is considered to determine need. You will be required to openly and fully discuss your financial situation with a Habitat interviewer.”
Applications are available locally, Bowers added. “If anyone is interested in an application they can write for one or stop by at 3600 Broadway which is the Dominican Sisters Convent.”
Brochures are available that provide more information and a way to begin the application process, he added.
