HOISINGTON — The debaters at Hoisington High School are getting ready to host a ten-school open (varsity) debate tournament on Saturday, Sept. 27, and they are looking for volunteers to judge.
Judge volunteers need to be out of high school. No experience is necessary. Training will be provided. Volunteers may judge only one round (about an hour and a half) or as many as five rounds. Volunteers may contact Mr. Oborny at the high school.
This year’s topic deals with exploration and development of the earth’s oceans.
The Garrett Blase Memorial Debate Tournament will feature competition from ten schools: Bucklin, Colby, Dodge City, Ellinwood, Hays, Kingman, Lyons, McPherson, Pratt, and Sterling. As the host, the Cardinals will not compete.
The Hoisington High debate team this year features only one three-year debater, Robbie Willesden. Junior varsity (second year) debaters include Corbin Crawford, Joey Lewis, Logan McHenry, Abi Hurter, and Sydney Boxberger. Novice (first year) debaters include Nick Doerschlag, Elizabeth Lacey, Alicia Earegood, Ben Schneider, Dustin Edmonson, Brendan Day, Seth Colson, and Tiffany Umphrey. The team is coached by Marion Oborny.
The Cardinals will begin their competition season Oct. 4 at Hays. The rest of the season includes League Debate at Sterling College; invitationals at McPherson, Colby, Thomas More Prep - Marian (Hays), Sacred Heart (Salina), Larned, and Pratt; Regionals; and State at El Dorado.
