J and D Raceway shut down by acts of vandalism

Someone broke into the building at J and D Raceway on Tuesday, set fire to paper towels and threw feces around in the bathroom. Great Bend Police are investigating the case as arson, estimating damage at $350.
About four years ago, Chad and Stephanie Boone at Bass-X Autosound and Accessories opened J and D Raceway, a track for remote control cars, at 1924 Williams St., next to Brit Spaugh Park. The fenced area includes a building known as the RC Shack. This facility has a rest room, electricity and air conditioning, and is free for those wanting to drive or work on their remote control vehicles, Stephanie Boone said. There are also work benches and a table inside.
The building is closed in the evening, but a window was broken to gain entry. Great Bend Fire Department was called to extinguish the fire at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Boones were contemplating the future of the raceway.
“We seriously contemplated just tearing it down,” Stephanie Boone said. “It keeps getting vandalized,” she added, noting this wasn’t the first time.
However, she said she expects it will open again, although there may be some changes.
