Motorists taking Kansas Avenue may find orange cones and signage greeting them this week as construction work begins to replace the concrete pavement from the 1600 block north to 24th Street, Great Bend City Engineer Rob Winiecke said.
The project, being done by L&M Contractors of Great Bend, starts Monday. Work is scheduled to occur over the next three months, but Winiecke said the weather may cause delays.
Winiecke said residents can expect to see localized street closures in the immediate vicinity of the work zone, barricades and other traffic control devices, lane shifts, heavy machinery, and construction crews in the area. In all cases, local access will be allowed, and the contractor will establish appropriate advanced notice of detours around the closure.
Business owners along this corridor will be notified a minimum of five working days in advance of the anticipated closure. Contact with business owners shall be made with a designated member of city staff present. Access to local businesses will be maintained.
Winiecke said the project is broken down into four phases.
Work completed under Phase I involves the closure of Kansas Avenue between 16th and 18th streets. Phase II includes the closure between 18th and 20th streets.
Phase IIIA includes a partial closure of all of Kansas Avenue. The existing northbound lanes of Kansas Avenue will be closed and traffic will be maintained on the southbound half of the roadway for both directions.
Lane shifts for existing traffic patterns shall occur before/after the traffic enters/exits the intersection adjacent to the work zone (i.e. 20th Street and 22rd Street).
Construction work completed under Phase IIIB of this project will also involve a partial closure of Kansas. The existing southbound lanes of Kansas Avenue will be closed and traffic will be maintained on the northbound half of the roadway for both directions.
Under Phase IVA, there will be a partial closure of Kansas. The existing southbound lanes will be closed and traffic shall be maintained on the northbound half of the roadway for both directions. Lane shifts for existing traffic patterns shall occur before/after the traffic enters/exits the intersection adjacent to the work zone (i.e. 23rd Street and 24th Street). Access to residences on the west side of Kansas Avenue shall be maintained at all times throughout the duration of this phase of the project.
Construction work completed under Phase IVB also involves a partial closure of Kansas. The existing northbound lanes of Kansas Avenue may be closed and traffic shall be maintained on the southbound half of the roadway for both directions. Lane shifts for existing traffic patterns shall occur before/after the traffic enters/exits the intersection adjacent to the work zone (i.e. 22nd Street and 24th Street).
