New voters may need to show ID at polls

County Clerk Donna Zimmerman has explained that some voters may have to show ID when they vote, due to current federal regulations.
Zimmerman explained, “Under the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA), first-time voters must provide identification to a county election official before receiving a ballot.”
Zimmerman explained that a citizen is a first-time voter if:
• They have never voted in Barton County.
• They have not previously provided identification to the election office at the time of registration or at any other time before the election.
“If you fall under one of these circumstances, you need to provide one of the following documents before you receive a ballot,” she reported.
That list of documents include
• Current and valid driver’s license or non-driver’s ID card issued by the Kansas Division of Motor Vehicles.
• College or high school ID card.
• Current utility bill.
• Bank statement.
• Paycheck.
• Government check.
• Other government document showing the voter’s name and current address.
• Statement from post office, that the voter lives in and receives mail at a specific location.
She said there is a stipulation on some of the documents. “The name and address on the form used for identification must match your voter registration information.”
Voters who are unsure about their documentation should look into it before they try to vote, Zimmerman added. “Obtaining this information before election day will allow lines to flow quickly and the election process to run smoothly at your polling place. To check your voting status, contact the Barton County Election Office at 620-793-1835.”
New voters are running out of time to be able to participate in the general election, Zimmerman noted earlier.
Voters can still register until the close of business on Monday, according to Zimmerman.
According to information from Zimmerman, voters may register to vote during regular business hours at the following locations:
