The Great Bend Recreation Commission’s contribution to next month’s Party in the Park will be a mud volleyball tournament on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park. GBRC Director Diann Henderson said the Rec Commission’s new Imagination Station will also be featured at the event planned for Sept. 21.
The mud volleyball tournament, known at “Oozefest,” will take place at 11 a.m.
“It’s going to be a full day of events at Veterans Memorial Park,” Henderson said.
Other events, according to Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes, include the Tuff Enuff Fun Run/Walk in the park, sponsored by Club 1 Fitness; the Fun (bounce) Zone bounce at 10 a.m., from the Optimist Club; the Barton County Bark 4 Life at 11 a.m. in the dog park, benefitting Relay for Life; Picnic in the Park at 5 p.m., hosted by the Great Bend City Council; and live music at the Al Burns baseball field, starting at 7 p.m., and featuring Ricky Fugitt and Logan Mize.
September is Melting Pot Month in Great Bend, with events planned all month long, Hayes said. Explore Great Bend pins, providing deals and discounts at all of the month’s events, will be sold for $5. Tickets to the Party in the Park will be $5 for anyone who purchases an Explore Great Bend pin.

Henderson reported on the event Monday during the GBRC board meeting. GBRC’s Imagination Playground, a portable playground system of blocks for creative play, was first unveiled during the June Jaunt. The Rec Commission is looking for teams and volunteers for the mud volleyball.
The GBRC board had only routine business to conduct on Monday, with information items taking up most of its agenda. Henderson said the Kansas Recreation & Parks Association executive board will hold its next meeting in Great Bend, starting at 11:30 a.m. this Thursday at the Great Bend Activity Center.
The Activity Center and City Auditorium gym are closed this week for annual maintenance, and GBRC is taking enrollments for fall sports.
