Plane crashes near Lake Wilson

A Cimarron man died Sunday afternoon after the single-engine airplane he was piloting crashed in Russell County near Lake Wilson.
Rufus M. (Rusty) Woods III, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Russell County’s 911 dispatch received a report of a plane crash at 12:20 p.m. Deputies from the Russell County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, on Mellard Road between 199th St. and 200th St. Other responders were from Kansas Wildlife and Parks, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas Highway Patrol, Russell EMS, Russell Rescue Squad and Lucas Fire Department.
The plane was a Van’s RV-8, a two-seat aircraft sold in kit form by Van’s Aircraft. Mr. Woods’ family was notified of the accident along with the FAA. Kansas Highway Patrol and the FAA will be the primary investigators of the accident.
