A St. John man was taken to Wichita with serious injuries following a three-vehicle wreck west of Ellinwood Thursday evening.

Paul D. Watts, 42, was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where he remained in serious condition as of Friday morning. Watts, who was riding a motorcycle, was the only person hurt in the crash.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, at about 5 p.m. Thursday, a 2012 Chevrolet pickup driven by Jerry M. Standlee, 67, Ellinwood, and Watts on his 2006 Harley-Davidson were eastbound on U.S. 56 in the construction zone. At the same time, a 2012 Ford Uhaul truck, driven by John S. Guy, 25, Chandler, Ariz., was westbound in the zone.

Standlee was slowing for traffic that was stopped due to a flag man who was controlling traffic. Watts couldn’t stop in time and collided with the rear of Standlee’s pickup. Watts then entered the westbound lane, colliding with the Uhaul.

There were two passengers in the Uhaul, Kevin B. Demetro, 14, Chandler, Ariz., and Guy Miller, 26, Twin Falls, Idaho. Neither of them were injured.

The accident closed the highway until about 7:30 p.m.

The KHP reported that Watts was not wearing a helmet.
