A woman who was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle Saturday evening in Great Bend later died as a result of her injuries.
Lt. Bill Browne at the Great Bend Police Department confirmed that Rhiannon Young, 33, of Hoisington, died after being flown to a Wichita hospital on Saturday.
Officers were called to the 2200 block of U.S. 281 Bypass, the area of the Harm’s Field baseball diamond, at 8:24 p.m. Saturday. They found Young on the side of the road with injuries. It was reported that a white sport utility vehicle left the area headed north at the time of the accident. Young was taken to Great Bend Regional Hospital and later transferred to Wichita with head injuries, according to police reports.
Barton County Dispatch notified the Great Bend Tribune Saturday evening, asking anyone who witnessed the accident, or who has seen a vehicle with new damage, or who may have information regarding the hit-and-run accident, to call 911 immediately.
“I’m sure it helped a lot,” Brown said of public input. Police learned that she had been in a white Expedition earlier with a male who was known to her. This “person of interest” consented to police searching his vehicle, and he was interviewed by police, Browne said.
“We’re not sure what happened,” he said Monday afternoon. “We’re still investigating this as a hit-and-run fatality.”
This public’s assistance is still requested in the ongoing investigation, the lieutenant added. Anyone with any kind of information about what may have gone on in that neighborhood between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Saturday may call the Great Bend Police Department, 793-4120, or call Crime Stoppers to leave a tip anonymously. The telephone number for Crime Stoppers is 792-1300, or 888-305-1300 for toll-free calls outside of Great Bend.
Young’s funeral arrangements are being handled by Bryant Funeral Home. Her obituary may be found on the Tribune website.
