k-9 lazer dies

Great Bend Police Chief Steven Haulmark and city staff announced “with heavy hearts” that K-9 Lazar died Wednesday morning.

Lazar has served the citizens of Great Bend from 2015 to 2019 as the drug enforcement K-9, Haulmark said. Lazar was first partnered with Cpl. Shane Becker and upon Becker’s promotion to detective he partnered with officer Amber Allen. He lived with Allen after being retired in 2019 from the Police Department. Lazar was trained at US K9 Unlimited and helped the Great Bend Police Department with numerous drug arrests/searches, the chief said. Lazar was having mobility problems in 2019 and was retired immediately.

Lazar started having severe pain when Allen, along with Animal Medical Center, decided that euthanizing was necessary despite best efforts. Becker and Allen were with Lazar as he was laid to rest.

“Special thanks to K-9 Lazar for his service to our community,” Haulmark said. “Please send caring thoughts to Detective Becker, Officer Allen, and police department staff that worked with Lazar on a daily basis.”
