PAWNEE COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office have located and arrested Alejandro Alvarado, the subject who fled an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning. Neither the officer nor Alvardo was shot during the earlier incident.
Alvarado was at large for about six hours before he was arrested just after 8 a.m. at 551 R Rd. in Pawnee Rock. EMS responded and evaluated Alvarado.
He was booked into the Pawnee County Jail on an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault out of Finney County. The investigation is ongoing.
The Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance at approximately 2:10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded.
According to reports from the KBI, preliminary information indicated that at approximately 1:30 a.m., a deputy from the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle along U.S. 56, approximately 3 miles east of Larned. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he smelled marijuana, and two male occupants were asked to exit the vehicle. An altercation occurred during the pat down between the deputy and the male who had been the vehicle’s passenger. The deputy fired shots at the subject, later identified as Alvardo, age 21, from Lincoln, Neb. Alvardo fled on foot, crossing the highway and running south from the area.
While Alvarado remained at large, it was unknown if he had been injured by gunfire or if he was armed. The deputy was not injured during the incident. The vehicle’s driver was taken to the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this incident. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Pawnee County Attorney for review. This investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.
