Two teenagers from Barton County were taken to Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington on Monday after a driver attempted to pass a semitrailer at the same time the semi driver was attempting to make a left-hand turn. Both the driver and passenger in a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer sustained minor injuries, while the semi driver reported no injury, according to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred at 3:37 p.m. at NW 90 Road and NW 10 Ave., southwest of Hoisington.
The Blazer was driven by Shane Schroeder, 16, of Hoisington and his passenger was Devon Mater, 17, of Odin. The 1994 Peterbilt truck tractor was pulling a flatbed trailer and the driver was Brent Beran, 57, from Odin.
Both vehicles were traveling south in the 900 block of NW 10 Ave. when Schroeder began to pass the semi. He told the BCSO deputy that the semi slowed down and he thought it was to let him pass.
Beran said he had his turn signal on and was at the start of his turn when the Blazer hit his vehicle. The Blazer rolled in the ditch and the two people inside got out on the passenger side and ran into a field to get away from the vehicle, which looked like it was smoking.
