American Idol fans will get a new season, but on a different channel.
Entertainment Weekly reported that ABC revived American Idol, winning the show away from Fox, where it aired its 15 seasons.
ABC outbid both Fox and NBC for the rights to bring the show back on the air, EW reported.
ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said the show had been cancelled prematurely.
American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon, Dungey said, according to Entertainment Weekly. ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.
Changes could be on the way.
Host Ryan Seacrest might not have the time to return as host, since he was recently named as co-host of Live with Kelly and Ryan, according to Variety. However, Live is distributed by Disney, which would make it easy for him to work both shows, Variety reported.
No new judges or changes to the show have been announced yet.
But Disney co-chairman Ben Sherwood said the new version of the show will be bolder than it has been over the last 15 years.
Idol' is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABCs lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside 'Dancing with the Stars' and 'The Bachelor,' he said. America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever 'Idol.'
During negotiations last week, ABC insiders told Variety it would likely air in March 2018 on Sunday nights.
