There are some people that seem to never be in a bad mood, and then there are those that can't seem to get over their bad mood. If you are the latter, try some of these techniques to overcome the grumps. - photo by Megan Shauri
When something upsets you, it can be hard to not let it affect everything else you do. I find when I am angry or short tempered, everyone notices. I have less patience with my kids, I dont feel like being nice and friendly with anyone and I definitely dont have the energy to cook, clean or do other items on my to-do list. So it is key to be able to get over a bad mood quickly. Here are some ways to help you get back to being happy:

Find a resolution

The best way to move on from a bad mood is to find a solution. If you are fighting with someone, take some time to make up. If you are having a bad day at work, figure out how to solve your issue. If you simply woke up on the wrong side of the bed take a moment to meditate and get back to your zen self. Once the problem is solved, your bad mood should be too.

Compartmentalize

If something happened that set you off and there is no way to resolve it, try putting it aside until later. Even though it is usually best to resolve things quickly, that cannot always be accomplished.

Being able to put those feelings aside is crucial to not letting it affect the rest of your day. If you feel you are run by your emotions, meaning it is hard to detach and move on without that bad mood following you around all day, this may be hard to learn, but it is possible. Take a moment alone to recompose yourself, then take a deep breath and move on. The mood will pass- even if you have to fake it until it does.

Talk it out

Sometimes you just need to vent. Having a friend or spouse that allows you to open up and express what it is you are feeling is so valuable. Talking about it can help you sort out your own thoughts and feelings and often you can come to a resolution on your own. If not, your friend can offer some advice. And if nothing else, youve gotten it off your chest, and while it may not be fully resolved, at least you know you have someone that cares, and that always makes things better.

Do something you love

One great way to get over a bad mood is to do something you love. Get sweaty at the gym, take a quiet walk around the block or drink some cocoa while catching up on your favorite Podcast. Whatever it is that you love, do it. It will get your mind off your worries and help you feel better all at the same time.

Remember that you are in control of your own mood

In the end, it is important to note that you are the only one who can control your mood. While there may be plenty of outside influences that can affect you, you are ultimately the one who chooses how you will react to those influences. You can choose to get angry, yell, scream, cry and let it consume you, or you can choose to let it slide off your back and not let it take away your happiness.

While it may not be easy to let go of some of your emotions, it is possible and vital to your health. Staying calm, relaxed and happy keeps blood pressure low and helps you stay less stressed, which has long-term effects on your overall health.

So the next time you find a bad mood coming on, try these techniques to help shake that mood.
