Nintendo announced on Thursday that the new Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling game console in the country, according to Mashable.

The video game console, which allows gamers to play both at home and on the go, sold 4.8 million units in 10 months to U.S. households.

Nintendos sales surpass the PlayStation 2s record for the fastest-selling console.

The company forecasted that it will sell nearly 17 million consoles by April 2018, according to The Verge.

These numbers could catapult the Switch into the top 10-selling consoles of all time, according to Mashable. The PS2 has the most sales overall among video game systems with 155 million consoles sold.

These numbers will certainly excite Nintendo, which saw its Wii U console flop in stores, selling only 13.5 million units during its lifespan from 2012 to 2017, The Verge reported.

Thats right. If current forecasts hold, Nintendos Switch will sell more Switch devices in one year than the Wii U sold in five years.

TechCrunch explained part of the Switchs appeal.

Since the launch of the Wii in 2006, our lives have changed dramatically. Weve grown accustomed to taking our entire digital life with us wherever we go. While portable consoles have been around for a while, none have quite compared to the Switch, which can also hook into the TV and a proper controller to offer a full-fledged lean-back gamer experience, according to TechCrunch.

Video game website Polygon similarly said the Switch works as both an in-home and outside-the-house console, fusing both video game and mobile game cultures.

The system also produced a superb lineup of games, according to Polygon.

Not only are The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario two of the biggest names in gaming, but Nintendo also released a new game in each series during the Switchs first year. Each one set a new standard for Nintendo games already high bar for success, Polygon wrote.

Polygon also said the systems price, $299.99, is cheaper than what the Xbox One ($499.99) and PS4 ($399.99) asked for as launching prices.

And the site praised the system for inspiring parents to play video games with their children.

The Switch has games parents want to play and feel comfortable letting kids play, and those that kids want to play and double as a fun distraction on long car rides, according to Polygon. Plenty of parents use these as excuses to get a toy they want to play with, and I dont blame them. Nintendo has mastered the art of making hardware and games that work with your family.
