Forty years after its debut, Anakin Skywalkers lightsaber has officially changed hands.
In a new episode of The Star Wars Show, Lucasfilm Story Group creative executive Pablo Hidalgo said that the marketing department of Lucasfilm views Anakins old lightsaber as Reys now, according to Screen Rant.
Either way, the blade is no longer considered Anakins lightsaber by the Lucasfilm marketing department. It has now been officially dubbed Reys, he said in the interview, which you can watch here.
The lightsaber first appeared in the original Star Wars film in 1977, when wise Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi handed it over to Luke Skywalker.
Skywalker lost the lightsaber in The Empire Strikes Back when he got his hand chopped off.
The lightsaber, which was made famous by Lukes father Anakin Skywalker in the prequel films, made its return in last years The Force Awakens when Rey, the new star of the series, handed it back to Luke.
But now, it looks like itll be hers.
Rey might have last been seen handing the blade over to Luke in 'The Force Awakens,' but shes actually going to be holding onto it herself for the foreseeable future, if Lucasfilm has anything to say about it, according to Gizmodo. Unless she gets her hand cut off and loses it, that is. I mean, after all, it is the second entry in a Star Wars movie trailer. Lopped saber hands are a time-honored tradition!
Questions still remain about Lukes other lightsaber, the green one he wielded in Return of the Jedi, according to Polygon.
Hidalgo didnt offer specifics but did offer something of a clue.
We take to heart the lesson that Obi-Wan tried to impart to Anakin: This weapon is your life. Were not ones to lose track of lightsabers, he said.
