American retail stores are putting an emphasis on family this holiday season by shutting their doors on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.
For example, earlier this week, outdoor sporting gear store REI announced it canceled its Black Friday sales, according to USA Today. Video game giant Gamestop also said it will close its stores on Thanksgiving Day, too.
These closings come at a time when more and more retailers have elected to open their doors on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, Brad Tuttle wrote for Time magazine. Most have decided to close for Thanksgiving weekend as a matter of doing the right thing for their customers, Tuttle wrote.
In fact, heres a full glance of the popular retail stores that will be closed on Thanksgiving.
Fortune called this a "victory for family time."
Still, Tuttle said these stores may be announcing their closure to earn publicity and garner more sales. It may hook their shoppers into buying more products since consumers will see the store in a positive light, Tuttle wrote.
But regardless of intent, it seems Americans are on board with the idea of shutting stores down on those two days, especially since itll give them more time with their families.
In fact, Bill Martin, the founder of ShopperTrak, an analytics provider for retail companies, said he doesnt expect many Americans to shop during Thanksgiving weekend this year, according to Ohio news website WBNS-10TV.
"This year I feel the pendulum is ready to swing in the opposite direction," Martin told WBNS-10TV. "There's a movement afoot through Facebook and Twitter about pledging not to shop.
