Six-year-old Alexis Hwa was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia three years ago but stayed hopeful. Through the Make-A-Wish foundation, she surprised everyone with a very mature wish, asking to turn her battle with cancer into an animated cartoon to raise awareness of pediatric cancer.
Alexis' wish was inspired by the Charlie Brown episode "Why, Charlie Brown, Why," according to her story on the Make-A-Wish website. In this episode, Charlie Brown's friend Janice learns she has cancer and documents her experience.
In the short animated video posted to YouTube on Oct. 24, Princess Alexis is captured and locked in a tower by Kemia, a dragon who represents leukemia. However, Alexis continues to believe that one day she will escape the tower and be free.
Eventually a woman appears and explains what Princess Alexis must do to escape Kemia. "You cannot run away from Kemia. No feet can carry you fast enough or wings soar so high that he cannot reach you. To be free, you will have to fight," the woman in the video says.
Princess Alexis acknowledges that she is "brave, strong and surrounded by love," so she heads off to find the needed weapon, knowing it will take away her strength and her hair. After a battle with Kemia, the video ends with Princess Alexis blowing out a candle at her fifth birthday party, with a full head of hair.
The storyline was created by Alexis. Animators from a Seattle-based creative agency, World Famous, provided the graphics. Actress Jamie Chung was the narrator.
Alexis' battle against leukemia is documented on the Make-A-Wish website. She is in remission, according to today.com.
