DeleteLARNED — Agnes Gertrude Ohnmacht, 102, died March 31 at The Legacy at Parkview in Ulysses. Born May 30, 1909, in Olmitz, she was the daughter of Mary (Mayne) Corrigan and Andrew Hickey. She graduated from Hoisington High School on May 18, 1928. She received her teaching certificate from Fort Hays College and began teaching for three years in a one-room school house in the Olmitz area. On Oct. 6, 1931, she married Paul Werner Ohnmacht in Olmitz. They lived and farmed north of Olmitz until they moved to Larned in 1947. He died on March 19, 1981. She and Paul operated a cattle and wheat farm southwest of Larned. Upon his death she moved into Larned until her health began to fail. She then moved to Ulysses to be closer to her daughter Rita in November of 2007.
Mrs. Ohnmacht was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned where she was active with the altar society and in later years was a Laudator for the youth Religious Formation classes at the Sacred Heart Catholic parish. She belonged to the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital ladies auxiliary and was a Gray Lady at Larned State Hospital for many years. She was very active with the Better Homemakers HDU club and was a 4H project leader, teaching knitting classes. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She always had a large vegetable and flower garden.
Survivors include two daughters, Rita and Calvin Hall of Ulysses and Sheila and Leonard Fleske of Great Bend; two sons, Alvin and Lynn Ohnmacht of Crestline, Calif., and Darrell and Wauneta Ohnmacht of Amity, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Debbie and Roger Crane of Herald, Calif., Greg and Amy Ohnmacht of Los Osos, Calif., Laura and Elmer Schmitz of Highland, Denise and Randy Dowell of Ulysses, Terri Leiker of Colorado Springs, Colo., Steve and Kim Leiker of Ulysses, Wendy and Keith Hansen of Atlanta, Ga., and Carrie and Jenney Fleske of Kansas City; 12 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by triplet daughters, Agnes Aileen, Mary Eileen, and Ann Arleen; two brothers, Clarence and Henry Hickey; five sisters, Sister Mary Patricia Hickey, Annie Bahr, Rosie Bahr, Ellen Hickey and Florence Stickney; three granddaughters, Joyce Ann Ohnmacht Kozach, Lisa Ohnmacht Koehn and Dawn White Dinning; and one great-grandchild, Victoria Rachelle Dowell.
Vigil will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Beckwith Mortuary in Larned. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned, with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Burial will be in the Larned City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at the funeral home.
