Arlene Lois Barber 1930 - 2011

ELLINWOOD — Arlene Lois Barber, 81, died Sept. 12 at SeniorCare Home in Overland Park. Born July 8, 1930, at Ellinwood, she was the daughter of William and Bertha Elizabeth Bayer Peters. On June 1, 1952, she married Roy Jesse Barber in Ellinwood. He died on Oct. 3, 2006. A longtime Ellinwood resident, moving to Kansas City in 2007, she was a business graduate of Fort Hays State University where she was an active alumnus for many years. She also held degrees in psychology, elementary education, sociology and social work with an emphasis in drug and alcohol counseling.

Mrs. Barber was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Ellinwood. She was active with the Ellinwood schools, her woman’s circle and Barton County Community College.

Survivors include her son, Rex A. Barber of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Renee M. Button of Wichita, Rhonda K. Groves of Kansas City, Mo., and Kristie B. LeMond of Tempe, Ariz.; a sister, Helen Mae Frees of Raymore, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Seren LeMond, Haley Button, Matthew Groves, Samuel Groves, Sara Barber and Madeline Barber.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Ellinwood with the Rev. Katrina Palan officiating. Burial will be at the Lakin-Commanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at Kimple Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Fort Hays State University or EMI.
