August Freund passed away peacefully on Friday, June 4th at the age of 90. He was born at home on November 9, 1930 in Andale, Kansas to August F. and Leona (Colburn) Freund. August spent his childhood on the family farm in Little River. A resident of Great Bend since 1958, he moved to South Hutchinson in 2016 and resided at the Mennonite Friendship Community.
August graduated from Little River High School in 1948. He proudly served his country in the Marine Corp from December 1951 to December 1953, residing in Vista, CA. August and his wife, Vada, returned to Kansas in 1957. He worked in construction for Hahner, Foreman and Cale for over twenty years, and then worked for Baker-Hughes and retired in 1992. After retirement he enjoyed stonework, woodworking and working with metal. He was a former member of Prince of Peace Parish in Great Bend and a current member of Guadalupe Catholic Church in South Hutchinson, KS.
On May 26, 1951, he married Vada L. Folck in Little River, KS at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They were married for 70 loving years. August will be lovingly remembered by his children: Charla A. (Darren) Thornton of Olathe, Michael E. (Deborah) Freund of Great Bend, Mary Kay (Bruce) Kelm of Shawnee, Eric J. (Kathy) Freund of Hutchinson and Mark A. (Vina) Freund of Hutchinson. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Danielle Tyler, Leslie Reese, Jay Thornton, Barret Freund, Anna Loera, Andrew Freund, Craig Freund, Benjamin Kelm and Abigail Kelm; by great-grandchildren: Alexis, Joey, Ellie, Mia, Rigley, Kylie, Evonna, Evangelina, August, Asher, and James and a brother, David Freund (Rose) and sister-in-law, Marla Freund. He was preceded in death his parents, August and Leona Freund, brothers: James and Edgar and infant sister, Lola Marie.
Funeral mass will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, June 11, 2021 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Little River, with Father Charles Seiwert officiating. Burial will follow at Bean Memorial Cemetery, Little River with military honors by the United States Marines Corps. Visitation will be from 9:00 until 10:30 A.M., prior to the service with a Parish Rosary being said at 10:30 A.M. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Multiple Sclerosis Society in memory of August Freund, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
