LARNED — Blanche Mary Fern Courtney, 94, died Nov. 28 at her daughter’s home in Sumter, S.C. She was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Franklin County, the youngest child of Charles and Clara Curtis Adams. A former resident of Larned, moving from Gove in 1956, she retired in 1978 from Larned State Hospital where she was a psychiatric aide. She completed a year of college at Emporia State Teachers College and then taught school in western Kansas.

She remained a faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church of Larned until her health failed. She spent many hours working in the church’s Budget Shop, teaching Sunday school, and in the Rachel Circle of the Methodist Women. She enjoyed sending birthday and other greeting cards to family and friends.

On Oct. 1, 1939, she married Eulice James (E.J.) Courtney at Rantoul. He died Jan. 12, 1972.

Survivors include two sons, Glen Lee, Great Bend, and Raymond and wife Judith, Salina; a daughter, Linda Browning, and husband Donald, Sumter, S.C.; a brother, Glenn Adams, Ottawa; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna, Edith and Esther Adams, and a daughter-in-law, Becky Courtney.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Bill Fitzgerrel presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Youthville in care of Beckwith Mortuary, Inc.
